Amazon.com Review
Attention farmers and sailors--and any others who might want to know more about their local weather than a local radio has to offer--this Wireless Weather Station could very well be useful to you. More information than the average person would even know to ask for appears on readouts on a tiny aluminum base station only just bigger than 6 inches square. Three sensors (thermo-hygro, wind, and rain) transmit information from outdoor vantage points to the base station. Indoor and outdoor temperature (in degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius) and relative humidity are displayed. There are air pressure readings (in inHg or hPa, absolute or relative) as well as wind chill and dew point temperatures. The calendar and time displays (with manual setting option) are synchronized by tuning in to radio station WWVB in Colorado. There's even a forecast display and weather tendency indicator.

The advanced features available in this station are fairly staggering. The WS-2315AL has a detailed display of rainfall data for one-hour, 24-hour, or total-since-last-reset increments, measured in inches or millimeters. It features multiple programmable alarm functions for weather conditions such as approaching storms, heavy rains, or sudden drops in temperature or atmospheric pressure. In addition, it keeps records of all minimum and maximum values along with the times and dates of their recordings. Of special nautical interest are wind direction, displayed three ways, and wind speed in miles/hour, kilometers/hour, miles/second, knots or Beaufort scale. A COM port is included for easy connection to a PC. Heavyweather PC Interface software allows the recording and uploading of all the weather data from the base station, as well as up to 175 sets of weather history data. (The Web site www.heavyweather.info offers more information.)

The Wireless Weather Station set includes: a base receiver station, a thermo-hygro transmitter (WS-2310-25), a wind sensor (WS-2310), a rain sensor (WS-2310-16), an optional wired connection for data transfer, a software in CD-Rom format for transfer of data to PC, a PC RS232 serial port cable, and an AC/DC power adapter. (Base station can also operate on three AA batteries.) The base station measures 6 by 1-1/4 by 6-1/2 inches. La Crosse provides a one-year limited warranty on its weather stations. Each weather station comes with a thoroughly detailed instruction booklet. --Garland Withers

2 out of 5 stars Data base errors   August 29, 2008

The 2315 weather station is not the best deal in town. If you are trying to keep a history of the weather. The data base is in a compressed format and if there is an error, you have to start a new history file losing all your data. I do not know of a data base that does not get errors in the data. All data bases have some way to repair or delete bad entries except this one. Contacted customer service and they said there is no ability to delete/repair the bad records. So after looking at all the other reviews on this product I can not recommend anyone purchase this unit.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding value   August 15, 2008
I notice several reviewers have had negative experiences with this weather station, but mine have been very positive. This may be the least expensive fully-featured station that interfaces with a computer -- it's just a small fraction of the cost of a Davis Vantage Pro2 and, after more than a month of continuous use, it appears to be just as accurate as all others: I feed data continuously to the National Weather Service via the MADIS system and receive quality control check reports on data submitted every day.

While the control/display unit is OK, once you've interfaced it to your computer, you'll probably never look at it. Supplied Heavy Weather software is OK, but this unit also works great with Weather Display software ($73) -- far more powerful. Do note that the control/display unit connects to your computer via a 9-pin serial port plug. As my existing serial port is connected to my battery back-up, I had to buy and install a $16 PCI-serial port card to connect. While others have purchased serial-to-USB converters, I note many (including me) couldn't get these things to work.

The "wireless" claim could be a little misleading: the rain gauge and wind speed/direction sensor are hard wired (with supplied telephone cable) to the temperature/humidity sensor, which has AA batteries in it and transmits a radio signal to the control unit indoors. But much faster data sending occurs if the temp/humidity sensor is *also* hard wired to the control unit (6 sec. vs. 30 sec., I think...)

If you do your homework (highly recommended before purchasing any of these systems) you'll learn the biggest challenge you'll face is finding best possible locations for all the sensors. While some complain about the wires, having all the sensors separate from each other allowed me to best configure my system. 32-foot telephone cords are supplied; each can be doubled in length.

While I've had no problems and thus have not needed to contact customer support (terrible reputation), so far, this appears to be a great system -- at any price.

2 out of 5 stars DISAPOINTED WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE   April 16, 2008

LaCrosse Technology Wireless Weather Station Set
THIS SEEMS LIKE A NICE UNIT BUT HAVE PROBLEM WITH THE WIRELESS PART. I HAVE HOOKED IT UP WIRED NOW AND STILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE UNIT GIVING ME THE CORRECT TEMPERATURE. I HAVE CALLED CUSTOMER SUPPORT TWICE. THE FIRST TIME THEY TOLD ME TO MOVE THE SENDING UNIT. I HAVE GONE AS FAR AS BUYING 2 OTHER THERMOMETERS AND PLACING THEM NEXT TO THE SENDER AND STILL SEE 7 TO 12 DEGREES DIFFERENCE. THE SECOND TIME THEY TOLD ME TO SEND THEM THE SENDER AND THEY WOULD CHECK IT OUT AND REPAIR OR REPLACE. I SUGGESTED THAT THEY SEND ME A DIFFERENT SENDING UNIT AND I WOULD SEND THEM THE OLD ONE SO AS NOT TO BE WITHOUT USE OF THE REST OF THE WEATHER STATION FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. THEY SAID NO. THEY WOULD TRY TO HAVE IT BACK TO ME IN 3 WEEKS. I SAID THAT MAYBE IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR ME TO JUST RETURN THE WHOLE THING. THEY SAID THAT WOULD BE JUST FINE WITH THEM. I HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 34 YEARS AND WOULD NEVER TREAT A CUSTOMER LIKE THAT.

4 out of 5 stars Good Weather Station   March 21, 2008
After reading some of the other reviews and having just purchased the WS-2315AL I felt I must share my thoughts. I have owned other "professional weather stations" that were not as high of quality or provided as much information as the WS-2315AL. I found it easy to install and use after reading instructions. At $100.00 it is a great buy but don't expect it to be a $500.00 weather station either. For the serious weather watcher it is a good weather station.

2 out of 5 stars A good product   February 25, 2008
The system works very well and after a tornadic storm hit our area in Alabama, the wind sensor failed and they replaced it.
