too cool June 25, 2008 This was a gift for my husband. He loves it and it works great. It connects easily to the internet and we can see it from any where. The only problem is we have some wires in the yard that we have to be careful of. I think he can do something better though when he gets some time to work on it. It seems very accurate as long as you put the sensors in the right places (don't put the temperature sensor in direct sun).
La Crosse WS-2308AL Weather station May 31, 2008 I ask for this Weather Station for my birthday as I follow the weather and have wanted a good station at a good price. I did a lot of reviewing on the Amazon site and picked this model. It was fairly quick to set up although I had to go to Lowes to buy a pole fot the wind accessory. I like the information layout and download to the computer. I haven't tried to set up spread sheets but the online link like looks straight forward if not a bit complicated. I rarely give a five but I fully recommend this product.
Very Good, But a Few Flaws March 21, 2008 Overall, I'm happy with this weather station. The display is nicely arranged, the Heavy Weather software is simple and easy to use, and the temperature and barametric pressure are dead-on accurate.
Now for the bad. I haven't been able to get the rain sensor to work on a consistant basis. It worked one day, but then we got over an inch of rain and it recorded nothing. I've leveled it and re-leveled it, but it just won't work anymore. It looks like I'll have to contact La Crosse for a replacement.
The wind sensor, if mounted correctly, works well. It's difficult to find a good location for it, though. They say the top of a barn or garage is best, but I don't have those options. I've mounted it on a 12-foot 2x4 and a piece of PVC pipe near my driveway, and that works perfectly. It looks hideous, but it works. My wife has decreed that it cannot stay, and another mounting location will have to be found. She had no suggestions for exactly where this new location could be, though. Well, that's not entirely true. She did have one, but I can't mention it here. You get the idea.
So other than the rain sensor, everything is working fine. Hopefully the rain sensor will be replaced without much hassle, and I can find a location for the wind sensor that allows it to be accurate and at the same time doesn't displease the wife. Definately not bad for the money. Got to deduct one star for the rain sensor, but everything else is great.
Great Weather Station and Outstanding Support Staff February 29, 2008 This is my first and only weather station, so my experience with other products is non existent.
That said, I really enjoy this weather station. It was easy to install (I chose to wire everything together and bypass using wireless). The most difficult part of the install was identifying a good location for the wind, rain and hygro components.
My primary reason for installing a PWS was to have the station upload data to Weather Underground so that I could check the weather at the farm from any internet connected PC. The system works beautifully.
I chose to connect the WS2308 to my Linux server via the serial port, so I can't comment on the software that comes with the WS2308. Getting it to work in Linux was pretty simple via a perl script named wu-upload.pl (a google search should point you to the script). This script uses a perl module that provides a simple interface into the WS2308. I updated the script so that it not only uploads to Weather Underground, but also logs the data to a local database (for future use).
Out of the box, the WS2308 did not register any wind related data. I worked with the support staff at LaCrosse and we finally narrowed the faulty component down to the hygro unit. The hygro is a device that relays the data from the wind and rain sensors (as well as data that it collects) on to the main unit (the in house display). Throughout this process, the support staff was prompt with their replies and courteous. They also shipped several parts that always arrived within a few days (shipped out of Tennessee).
My primary complaint with the product is with the display. It's difficult to read if viewing it from any angle other than straight on. I also find the back light timeout annoyingly short (I think it only stays lit for 5 seconds).
I would also like to support a previous reviewers comments about the durability of the hardware. As I was installing the outdoor units, one of our horses stuck his head through the fence and grabbed the wind and rain gauges. He's known for destroying anything valuable that he can get his mouth on, however I couldn't find a mark on the parts. I honestly thought they were gonners.
Great product and delivery February 18, 2008 This is the best wireless weather station I have purchased. This pruduct was delivered on time. The price was worth every penny.
