5 out of 5 stars So nice I bought a second one   June 14, 2010
D. Maus
I got my original 00973 directly from Chaney. They sent it to me free when they were unable to provide me with a replacement wireless sensor for a different unit.

That 00973 worked so well in my living room, that I bought a second unit for my bedroom from Amazon for the best price on the web. Both units work off the same wireless sensor. I have set aside the new sensor for if and when the original sensor fails.

What I like: Atomic clock with seconds display synchronizes every night so it's pretty spot on. Min/Max temp feature automatically resets at midnight---just press a button to get today's high and low temps. Accurate barometer. Terrific battery life---original unit has gone over a year now.

What could be improved: The tiny day-of-week indicator is useless from any distance. Lowest humidity shown is 20%---ridiculous for desert climates. Sometimes a weak atomic clock signal is misinterpreted and it sets a totally wacky date and time. And take the forecast with a grain of salt.

2 out of 5 stars Very Confusing to Operate and Set-up. Works Well Most of the Time. Clock Can be Unreliable   November 14, 2009

I've had this unit now for over a year or so. It works fairly well. The only thing that is bad about it is setting it up when installing new batteries, etc.. The controls are very confusing (both the buttons on the front and the three buttons in the back). The instruction manual is not very coherent and is written badly. Also, there is no convenient way to grip the unit when moving it or picking it up. The way the buttons are on the front and back, it is very easy to inadvertently press one of the buttons and screw everything up. I did have a problem off and on with the time not displaying correctly. It will be correct for several weeks then it will be wrong. When I manually reset the time, it will eventually be incorrect again. Not a reliable clock!

4 out of 5 stars A good Atomic Clock and Weather Station for the casual meterologist   October 17, 2009

I purchased this Acu-Rite 00973 over a week ago and it works as advertised - if you follow the instructions implicitly (in other words, RTFM). I suggest those individuals who have trouble with their Atomic Clocks to let these units settle for a day or two. Reason being, after registration (of the outdoor weather unit), the clock will try to synchronize to WWVB signal that may be weak or non-existant at the time you set up the clock, due to atmospherics. The clock will eventually receive and synchronize to WWVB.

Pros:
It works as advertised!

Temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure readings are spot on (or within tolerance). Weather forecasting is a cute feature and is mostly accurate.

Cons:
Reception of WWVB is weaker than the other two Atomic Clocks I have, but it eventually receives the signal - and I live on the SoCal coast! (Best reception is during the dead of night.)

Since the 00973 is an alarm clock, I expected a button to briefly enable a backlight to see what time it is at night.

Searches for WWVB every hour for five minutes to re-synchronize. This must take its toll on the batteries.

DST (for those who live in a DST zone) indicator disappears when the clock fails to receive WWVB, but reappears when signal is received. An issue only during DST is observed in your area.

Moon phases rotate constantly, stopping on the current moon phase for a few seconds before rotating again. I would have preferred the display stay on the current moon phase.

Day of the week indicator starts on Monday, not Sunday. Would have preferred it either start on Sunday or display abbreviated day (Sun, Mon, Tue, etc.).

There isn't a "month" "date" indicator to the month/date numbers. Is it the fourth month or the fourth day/seventh month or seventh day? Confusing first thing in the morning before coffee.

2 out of 5 stars Looks nice, but not trustworthy   May 24, 2009

I think this is the best-looking device, but I'm very disappointed with the quality control and accuracy.

The first unit I purchased displayed a constant zero reading for indoor humidity. With the remote and base units litterally side-by-side, temperature readings were usually within 1 degree F. The atomic clock could not find a signal, but that's probably due to my location.

I exchanged the unit (because of faulty indoor humidity sensor), and again set up the indoor and remote sensors side-by-side. Temperature readings were usually within 1F. However humidity readings were rarely within 5%, and sometimes as much as 25% different. I observed these differences for about one week, indoors in So Cal. As before, the atomic clock did not find a radio signal. I never set or tested the barometric pressure.

I'm returning it and looking for an alternative.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible product   January 30, 2009

I purchased one of these units with inside and out temperature/humidity. I could not get any of the readings to be within 4 degrees of each other even with the outside sensor inches away from the main unit. The same was true for the humidity. I emailed the company and they never replied. That says it all.
