I received this digital rain gauge for my birthday in April '09. I soon discovered that it indicated about half of what my old fashioned rain gauge measured! I was very disappointed.

This was a gift to me, but it seemed that it would be a very useful gadget. Unfortunately, it has so many shortcomings that it's virtually worthless. The description is very inaccurate. For instance it says battery life is three years. Well, it is barely a month. And when you replace the batteries you lose all recorded data. Getting the outside and the inside unit to communicate is very difficult. The description says that the range is 330 feet. Actually it's more like 15 or 20 feet with line-of-sight through a thermo-pane window, and to get the inside and outside units to communicate, the instructions say to install the batteries and then hold the units five feet apart. Installing the outside unit battery is not easy, and after replacing it three times, the tabs on the battery compartment broke, so I had to jury-rig it using two screws and a rubber band to hold it down. It's not very accurate when compared to a glass tube rain gauge. Mine was about 10 to 20 percent off.

And now the clincher. It stopped working at all after about six months. Considering how poor it was, I decided it wasn't worth trying to get a replacement.

We had an older cylinder type rain gauge and wanted to advance into a modern digital type. I was so excited when I got it. However once it was set up and it rained, I was very disappointed. It was easy to set up and easy to read however it was not accurate at all. The cylinder type we have is much more accurate even if it can not give me the measurements to the 100 of an inch. The digital one was measuring less than half what our cylinder type measured. I returned the digital rain gauge to Amazon.
